Flooded Well Information

The RIGWA recommends that all well owners in Rhode Island have their well water tested for coliform bacteria in light of the recent storms that had caused severe flooding across our state.

If your wellhead had flooded, or if you had noticed a change in your water quality during (or after) the storm, then it is especially important that you have your well water tested for coliform bacteria.

Recommendations for Private Well Owners

1.  Sample Collection - When collecting your water sample, be sure to carefully follow the sample collection instructions provided by the laboratory.

Sampling instructions can also be found on Page 2 of the
Bacteria in Private Drinking Water Wells Factsheet

Factsheet published by the University of Rhode Island's Cooperative Extension Water Quality Program in conjunction with the Rhode Island Department of Health

2.  Laboratory Selection - It is important to have your well water tested at a State Certified Laboratory to ensure accurate results.

3.  Disinfection - If your water sample comes back as "Positive" (or "Present") for coliform bacteria, we recommend that you follow the instructions in the U.S. EPA's Factsheet What to Do After the Flood.

WARNING: Be sure to turn the power to your well pump OFF before disinfecting your well - an electrocution hazard exists.

If you are not familiar with the well disinfection process, we recommend that you contact a registered well driller or pump installer for further assistance.

4.  Prevention - If your wellhead is below grade there are steps you can take to help protect your well water supply. Contact a registered well driller or pump installer in your area to discuss extending your well casing to 18" above grade. This would help to keep your wellhead sanitary, would help to prevent your wellhead from flooding in future storms, and would make your well easier to service and maintain.
